Shukra: on beauty, value and relationship

A few thoughts on the planet this practice is named after.

Every so often someone asks me why the practice is called SHUKRA. The quick answer is that Shukra is the Sanskrit name for Venus. The longer answer is more interesting, at least to me.

In Indian mythology, Shukra is not a goddess of romance. He is a guru, a teacher of extraordinary learning, and the preceptor of the asuras, the beings usually cast as the opponents of the gods. He is said to hold the sanjivani vidya, the knowledge that can restore the dead to life. He is clever, refined, a little unconventional, and deeply loyal to those he teaches.

I have always liked that version of Venus. It is far richer than the one we usually meet.

In the chart, Shukra speaks about what we find beautiful and what we are drawn towards. That certainly includes love and partnership, and it is one of the first planets I look at when someone asks about relationships. But it also covers art, music, comfort, good food, a well made home, the pleasure of nice things. More subtly, it describes our sense of value: what we are willing to commit to, and what we consider worth our time.

When Shukra is strong and comfortable, people often have a natural grace about them. They know how to make a room feel welcoming. They can negotiate without making enemies. When it is under pressure, you sometimes see the opposite: difficulty receiving affection, restlessness around pleasure, or a habit of undervaluing oneself.

None of that is fixed, of course. A Shukra period can transform how someone relates to beauty and to other people. I have seen it happen many times.

The reason the name felt right, in the end, was simpler than any of this. Shukra is the planet of agreement, of two people sitting together and finding something of value between them. That is really all a good consultation is. A quiet, honest conversation in which something useful comes to light.
